We just got back from a wonderful trip to the Waco Zoo. Yes, Waco of cult compound fame. Thanks to a music festival in Austin and a rainy weekend, we had the zoo almost to ourselves. We drove up in a downpour that magically cleared just as we got to Waco.
There were about 4 cars in the parking lot. The animals were particularly interesting. We saw orangutans incredibly close and the followed us through the exhibit. The tigers and cougars also were active and very watchful. The lioness was pacing and even put her paws on the glass right in front of us. The big cats were a little too attentive, we felt like appetizers.
We saw one other family while we were in the zoo. We got muddy, and some mosquito bites, but we weren't rained on. We went through everything in about an hour and half and the girls had a blast. Not worrying about losing them in the crowd they could run free a little more.
After the zoo we headed over to the Waco museum complex. I had heard there was a children's museum and wanted to check it out. We got lucky - today was free as part of "Free Sunday series". The museum was fun for the girls. Had some science exhibits. Cute bus and firetruck. Animals in cages and a really cool butterfly exhibit. A butterfly was coming out of its cocoon as we watched. It also had store", train tables and car driving area. They have a weather area where you can stand in front of a green screen and pretend a tv meterologist. A little beyond the girls right now. They also have an outside old timey town that was "rained out" but we went through anyway.
Got no naps and ate too much fast food on the way, but all in all a great outing.
