When standing on chairs
Mom: You need to sit on your bottoms, big girls sit in chairs.
Lucy: We not big girls. Big girls wear panties.

Personal cheerleaders
To combat the "Mommy do it!" and occasional frustration the girls seem to feel as they are moving from babies to kids, I have been borrowing from a Yo Gabba Gabba's song "Don't Give Up." Keep trying, keep trying, don't give up, never give up.
And when they accomplish the task, I say "You did it!" and throw up my hands. Or the occasional "Good job." Which my mother thinks is really weird. Weird that mothers say "good job" to their children. For things like going down the slide themselves. I don't find it weird, I guess its just something people of my generation heard. Maybe she only heard, "that's great. now go get momma her cigarettes."
Now I get these things repeated back. When I turn on the tv to the right show Harper will say, "Momma, you did it!" I know, I feel pretty proud of myself, that remote is not easy to navigate early in the a.m. The other day Lucy said to Roomba (the robot vacuum) "Keep trying. Don't give up."

Some days...
are better than others. Despite a random 5:45 waking (and a 6:30 rousal) the day started out well with a run down to the park and seeing friends and running around on a nice day. After our return it went downhill fast. Lucy has been on a hitting spree. I put her in her room to cool off after whacking her sister and she stood in the doorway throwing punches at me. So much rage for someone 23 lbs is kind of funny. She landed a few later too. There also seemed to be an inordinate amount of whining and destruction. I'm hoping its related to the full moon or cedar pollen and all things will be better tomorrow.

Dinner: double dumpling chicken stoup
I am going to start posting recipes that are easy and work for kids. Tonight I made this Rachel Ray stoup (stewy soup). Great for a cold day.
2 TBS EVOO
4 celery ribs - chopped
2 med. onions - chopped
2 medium carrots - chopped
1.5 - 2 store bough shredded carrots
1 bay leaf
salt and pepper
6 cups chicken stock
1 pound ground chicken (I used turkey)
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped or grated
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 egg
1/2 cup Italian seasoned bread crumbs
1/2 cup grated parmesan
1 package fresh gnocchi
1 cup frozen peas
crusty garlic bread for mopping
Heat the EVOO in a soup pot over medium to medium-hight heat. Add the veggies, sason with salt and pepper and cook for 5 minutes. Add the stock, cover and bring to a gentle boil.
While the stock heats, place the chicken in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Add the garlic, nutmeg, egg, bread crumbs, and cheese. Combine the mixture and roll into walnut-size meatballs and add to the soup. Cook for 2-4 minutes, then add the gnocchi to the pot and cook for 5 minutes longer, or until they float. Add the peas and cook for 2 minutes longer. Turn the heat off and allow it to stand for 5 minutes to cool and thicken. We had with crusty garlic bread and a salad. Yummy.

Love your head
A few weeks ago Harper said she wanted to "pull off" my head. It didn't seem violent. More like an endearment. I love you so much I want to remove your head and keep it for myself. Sort of like "you are so adorable I want to eat you up." Anyway, tonight she said "I love your head, Mommy" and then leaned over to Greg and said she loved his head too. Precious.

Say Wha?
Lately the girls have been saying lots. Mostly, I understand because I was around for the origin of the statement. Sometimes, not so much. But they say it with such certainly. Surely, I must understand them. Nope. Still don't get it.
Tonight in the tub Lucy was laying a bar of plastic baby soap (really, this is going too far. FAKE soap? Insanity) on a blow up tropical fish and saying something that sounded like "wee gan". Many times. The same way. It was very important. She gave me a look. I am clearly an awful person.
Another thing they say on a regular basis is "wee oh, wee oh". Its sort of sireny and said over and over. Its more popular with Harper. The other day in the backseat Lucy looks over and says, "Sister, no more wee oh wee oh". So, it annoys her too, but at least she gets understands what it means.

2009-1-1
We had a little drama here on New Year's Day. I was out at a yoga class and hanging out at Eileen's house. We had Jessica come and Greg headed out. Lucy was playing with Jessica in the backyard listening for Harper (who was still sleeping in her crib) on the monitor.
Then I got a call from Brinks. Who told me that the babysitter Kevin (???) was locked out of the house and the baby was inside the house. Panic. Rushed home and got some of the details on the way. Greg had locked them out. The police and fire department were there. Jessica had no cell phone and we had no key outside the house. Luckily Harper slept most of the time and the 15 minutes she was up they were talking to her through the window.
Hope this does not indicate a dramatic 2009.
